Superior Coaches - A Brief History
From the early Superior Studebakers of the mid-1920's, to the current sleek new Superior Premier, Superior has been in the business of producing professional vehicles in Lima, Ohio. From the visionary craftsmen, mechanics and businessmen that founded the company in 1923, to the talented and experienced staff of today, Superior has been achieving their goal of producing the best engineered, most elegantly styled quality crafted vehicles in the industry.
The platforms may have changed throughout the years, be they Studebaker, Pierce- Arrow, Cadillac, LaSalle, Packard, Pontiac, Buick or Chevrolet, the constant has always been the sturdy substructure. In the beginning constructed of composite wood framed bodies, then in 1938, Superior pioneered the all-steel welded body. The new bodies were assembled within master framing jigs, to exact standards, giving uniformity to all models. This steel substucture continues today and is the backbone of every Superior Coach.

Over the years Superior has had different ownership groups and various plants. In 1981, a group of private investors, purchased the company from Sheller-Globe Corporation, and renamed the company Superior Coaches. Also in 1981 they acquired the Sayers & Scovill funeral coach business, better known as S & S Coach Company and they began to produce both brands in the Lima, Ohio.
As sales grew, the company constructed their new 180,000 square foot state of the art Lima plant in 1995, which is where Superior funeral coaches and six-door limousines are currently built today on Cadillac and Lincoln professional chassis. In 1999 the company acquired Eureka Coach and Miller-Meteor funeral vehicle lines and the Company was renamed Accubuilt, Inc. in 2000.
With more than 80 years in the funeral coach business, Superior has made significant contributions to the advancement of the modern hearse. More Superior funeral vehicles are in service today than any other brand. Superior continues to dominate the market and together with the Accubuilt brands, manufacture more professional vehicles than all competitors combined. Superior has vehicles still in service world-wide that pre-date their oldest competitor's inception by more than 20 years. The old adage still rings true, Superior and Accubuilt are not the BEST Professional Vehicle Manufacturer because they are the oldest and the largest, they are the oldest and largest Professional Vehicle Manufacturer because they are the BEST!
